Lefika La Phodiso: 2012 Community Art Counselling
Lefika La Phodiso (The Art Therapy Centre), in collaboration with the Department of Arts and Culture, is conducting a part-time course on Community Art Counselling, from 15 February 2011 until November 2012 in Johannesburg.
The course is based on an internationally recognised form of art psychotherapy which is effective for children, youth and adults. Lefika has developed a model of training with an emphasis on group-based interventions, informed by psychoanalytic thinking as applied to community contexts. Using this theoretical framework, the course incorporates art making and creative expression within the counselling process.
The group training increases reach, addresses sustainability, and increases the capacity of counsellors. The development of a supportive group dynamic and structure utilising creativity, allows a safe space to consider and address the impact of multiple traumas and losses within South African society.
The Lefika community art counselling framework:
- Is less threatening than talking;
- Transcends cultural and language barriers;
- Allows children forced to assume adult responsibilities, the opportunity to play and be children again;
- Is easily accessible to mentally and physically disabled adults and children;
- Is appropriate and efficient in an environment where access to art and counselling resources are scarce.
Time: 12h00 - 16h00.
The format of the course will consist of experiential image based group work, lectures, group supervision and a supervised placement. The Community Art Counselling placement will be in addition to the standard course hours.
Topics to be covered will include:
- Introduction to psychoanalytic and psychodynamic thinking and theory as applied to community art counselling;
- Group therapy practice and theory;
- Exposure to a range of art making activities including clay, sand and collage;
- Ethics, organisational skills, social entrepreneurship and business/project planning;
- Experience, understand and apply basic art counselling skills with individuals and in group settings;
- Demonstrate and apply basic art counselling theory to the realms of HIV/AIDS, trauma, abuse, loss, bereavement and disability – working with children and adults;
- Undertake an internally and externally supervised placement;
- Community Art Counselling placements can be arranged with your current employer or alternatively Lefika will assist in sourcing suitable placements within the community.
