THE HOCKEY SCHTICK: New paper finds Sun caused abrupt climate change 2,800 years ago
A paper recently published in Nature Geoscience finds that large changes in solar UV radiation induced amplified effects upon climate and abrupt climate change via the atmospheric circulation. The authors state, "We conclude that changes in atmospheric circulation amplified the solar signal and caused abrupt climate change about 2,800 years ago, coincident with a grand solar minimum." The IPCC dismisses solar effects upon climate by only looking at small changes in Total Solar Irradiance (TSI), while ignoring large [up to 20%] changes in solar UV within and between solar cycles. The paper identifies a new mechanism by which small changes in solar activity may have amplified effects upon climate, others being via ozone or clouds.
Rep. Sensenbrenner took his unscientific personal conclusions one step further, saying he believed CO2 would help “crop yields go up” and make it “easier to feed 7 billion people.”
“I’m not one of the people going around saying CO2 is bad for you,” he concluded.
In fact, scientists around the world are calling man-made global warming one of the biggest threats to agricultural production.

The US was hit by seven hurricanes during 1886, the largest one year total on record. Two of these storms were major hurricanes – both of which hit Texas .
By contrast, the US has not been hit by a major hurricane since 2005 – the longest such period on record. The lack of major hurricanes is no doubt a direct result of man’s evil interference in the climate system.
In another blow to the alarmist fallacy that global warming causes more extreme weather, a paper published last week finds the intensity of the Indian summer monsoon has gradually decreased over the past 150 years. Furthermore, the authors find solar activity may be responsible for cyclical patterns in monsoon intensity.
EPA-NASCAR green deal covers everything--but racing! | Washington Examiner
President Obama’s eco-friendly EPA inked a green partnership deal with high-octane NASCAR Monday to promote recycling and environmentally-friendly products to the sport’s millions of fans.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, NASCAR will encourage fans to buy “sustainable concessions” at races, expand the use of “safer chemical products,” conserve water, reduce waste, promote recycling, push products approved by the EPA that have a small enviro footprint and encourage suppliers to get an “E3 tuneup” aimed at promoting sustainable manufacturing.

Teaching kids to think critically about climate
Two recently published books suggest that the public – and school children in particular – are being fed lies about environmental issues such as climate change. The distorted and selectively reported science in these books highlights some of the challenges that Australian teachers face in teaching science, and how important it is that they are supported in this task.

Heartland reflects on its beating | Environment | guardian.co.uk
Going to Heartland conferences was always a bit like entering the portal to an alternative universe. Speakers and audience are almost entirely male, white and getting on in years. Jokes about Al Gore fly fast and furious, and can be counted on to get big laughs.
But this year's event had a sense of desperation...."It certainly raises the cost of doing business when your arch-enemies or a very vocal segment knows what you are up to in every little detail," said Marc Morano, who runs the contrarian website Climate Depot and spoke at the conference.
But he said he was hopeful that Heartland would come back. "I think it's a temporary feeding frenzy," he said. "If Heartland had just started last year and only had 10 donors when that happened it could have been fatal. But this is a hiccup."
I was sitting near Suzanne, and I'm thinking that at least two of the three descriptors in bold above may apply to Suzanne herself.

UK Energy Bill Avoids Carbon Pledge
New electricity legislation will avoid a firm commitment to banish coal and gas by the 2030s. Ministers previously said they wanted to make energy clean within two decades. Environmentalists wanted that statement to dictate today's Draft Energy Bill but the government says it wants to retain flexibility on the target date. Environmentalists will also be worried that the Bill does not put an explicit constraint on any dash for gas.
Is The Government Getting Cold Feet Over Its Costly Energy Bill?
Household energy bills will rise as a result of an overhaul of the sector to be unveiled on Tuesday, ministers admitted, amid industry warnings the reforms would add unnecessary costs. Charles Hendry, Energy Minister, told The Daily Telegraph that the government would “be asking the Commons Energy Select Committee to look at alternatives” to its proposal.

Why do economists describe climate change as a ‘market failure’? | JunkScience.com
Mainly because they are absolutely clueless about the physical world (and by observation not too flash when it comes to the financial one either)
Moreover, they mistake carbon dioxide emissions as costs rather than the tremendous good they are for both humanity (boosting crop growth) and wildlife (increasing primary productivity and protecting more wild lands from the plow). Since they start from such a flawed premise they have no hope of ever getting the economics of energy and society anywhere within the ballpark.
Right now, natural gas is so abundant and cheap that some worry the U.S. and Canada, which has large reserves north of those in the U.S. Midwest, may soon run out of storage capacity. Some companies have even announced plans to curtail drilling due to falling prices and oversupply.

Chech President Václav Klaus´s notes for his speech at the Heartland Institute conference are worth reading. Here is an extract
[John Kehr] The Inconvenient Skeptic » Skeptic Climate Conference Day 1
This was the first day that I got to meet any of the people that have been involved in the skeptic side of the global warming debate. Just from that perspective it was an interesting day. There are many very smart and capable people here that know a great deal about the Earth’s climate. Many scientists from around the world were willing to pay for their trip here to discuss the science of the global warming debate. Some of these people have been involved in the debate for a very long time and have seen funding dry up as a direct result of the conclusions they reached about global warming. It has been good to meet all of them, even if some of them have ideas that I do not support.
Here is a quick summary of the speakers from Day 1. This doesn’t include the meal speakers.
He mentioned that NATO doesn't care about AGW; ordinary people in Europe think that the hysteria is over; the AGW advocates have changed their tactics and try to suppress the debate as much as they can because the more it is being debated, the more people see how suspicious the doctrine is. So the alarmism has subsided, Klaus thinks, but given the advantage of facts, this new silence isn't in the skeptics' interest.
The rest of the blog entry will discuss some Czech media responses to his speech.
Global warming alarmism, anyone? The public is cooling to the rhetoric - HUMAN EVENTS

BOULDER, Colo [Science News]. — Earth’s ecosystems keep soaking up more carbon as greenhouse gases accumulate in the atmosphere, new measurements find.
The research contradicts several recent studies suggesting that “carbon sinks” have reached or passed their capacity. By looking at global measurements of atmospheric carbon dioxide, the new work calculates instead that total sinks have increased roughly in line with rising emissions.
“The sinks have been more than able to keep up with emissions,” said Pieter Tans, an atmospheric scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Earth System Research Laboratory in Boulder, Colo. Tans presented the findings May 15 at an annual conference on global monitoring hosted by the lab.

Feeding the Planet Without Destroying It - TIME
Climate change is the environmental problem that obsesses us, the one that's the focus of high-flying international summits and hardcore national politics. But it's not the only environmental problem — and it's not even the biggest one. That happens to be the crisis in agriculture and land use, the subject of what Jon Foley — the head of the University of Minnesota's Institute on the Environment — calls the "other inconvenient truth." Put simply, the act of feeding 7 billion plus human beings already puts more stress on the planet than any other single activity — and with both population and global wealth continuing to grow, we're going to need to figure out a way to produce more food without further damaging the environment. Otherwise we may end up running out of both food and the planet.

Buhr disagrees with efforts that allow kids to make their own decisions about established scientific conclusions. "We don't ask students in science class to make up their own minds over whether they believe in photosynthesis or if the earth is round," she said. "Why would we be doing that here?"

Negotiate a world carbon [dioxide hoax scam] price signal, now | EurActiv
[Stéphane Dion and Éloi Laurent] Governments would be free to invest, as they see fit, revenues from the carbon emission levy and from the corresponding elimination of fossil energy subsidies. For example, they could invest in research and development in clean energy, public transportation, etc. They could also choose to address social inequalities with respect to access to energy.
Developed countries would be required to set aside part of their revenues to help developing countries introduce mitigation, adaptation and carbon sink creation policies (the latter through reforestation, for example). The contributions of individual developed countries would be based on what their respective GHG emissions represent relative to the total emissions of all developed countries.
This international agreement would allow countries to levy border taxes on products from countries that have not established a carbon price signal in accordance with the international standard. The message would be clear to all large GHG emitters: if you do not levy a carbon price on your products before exporting them, other countries will do it for you – and will keep the resulting revenue. It will be in each country’s interest to comply with the international agreement, to levy a carbon price on its own emissions, and to use the resulting revenue as it sees fit.
